Our furniture features the beauty of the wood itself, with a clear finish over either a natural or stained surface. Each piece is made to last, often using mortise & tenon and/or dovetail joinery (sometimes fully hand cut) using basic machinery and experienced hands. Some of our furniture is made from solid wood, depending on the style and customer preference. Some of our furniture is made using real wood veneer over a hardwood-plywood substrate, trimmed with solid wood. Most of our wood is locally sourced, FSC certified, or old 'new stock'. (25 yr+)(veneer).
Veneer allows us to use and show the full width of the tree for a wider panel, without sacrificing panel stability. It also allows us to create various patterns with the wood grain, use inlays, and to use figured wood that might not be feasible otherwise. The variety of color, texture, and grain pattern (the figure) naturally occurring in wood is what I like most about working with wood; and I enjoy allowing this beauty to show in my work.
As Owner, I have built (or repaired) many styles of furniture in over 30 years of experience woodworking. They include Traditional, Colonial, and various English, to Craftsman, Modern, and Transitional; and I have successfully blended different style features 'she' wanted with other style features 'he' wanted. I work with my customers to design the style they want.
The 'us' in The Suttmiller Woodshop is currently a 'one man shop' with occasional help from family members. I describe the designs I personally build as 'Transitional' because I blend features I like from Danish Modern, Traditional, and others into my pieces.
I have not been concerned with a 'return policy' - because so far everyone has loved the pieces they bought! I feel that if a customer is not fully satisfied with an item they should not have to keep and pay for it. Exceptions could be shipping charges and the 'cost of materials' for a custom order; but with our satisfaction rate I waive the 'cost of materials' unless a specific project requires that in the up front agreement.
Let The SUTTMILLER WOODSHOP design and build your next prized piece of furniture.
